As part of my ongoing "The Forest Song" series, this latest session was all about honoring one of the most intimate and fleeting moments in a mother’s journey: breastfeeding. Too often, new mothers focus on capturing traditional milestones like first steps or birthdays, overlooking the tender and unique experience of breastfeeding. Yet, this phase passes all too quickly, and I wanted to use this session to showcase its beauty and significance.
Set in a breathtaking forest location, this shoot was about celebrating the powerful connection between mother and child. The serene greenery, the peaceful quiet of nature, and the dappled sunlight through the trees provided the perfect backdrop for this moment between mama and her gorgeous baby boy.
Every breastfeeding session is unique, but they all share one common thread—the bond that is so strong and visible in these moments. It’s a stage of motherhood that can be challenging and exhausting, but it’s also filled with love, patience, and tenderness. Through this session, I wanted to freeze time for just a little while, allowing this mama to look back at these images and remember this profound connection with her baby.
In my years as a family photographer, I’ve come to realize that everyone needs a breastfeeding session in their lives. These moments deserve to be remembered, cherished, and celebrated, just like any other milestone. They tell a story of care, love, and sacrifice—one that’s over before you know it.
It was a privilege to capture this mother’s journey, and I hope that more women will feel inspired to document these powerful moments with their little ones. Because when you look back, it’s often these quiet, unspoken moments that you cherish the most.
Not only do these sessions take place in some of Gisborne’s most beautiful natural settings, like forests or beaches, but they also allow moms to take a moment and just be with their baby—no distractions, just pure connection.
